Using A Tow Rope

There are some important guidelines that need to be followed to insure a safe tow that will preserve the life of the tow rope or chain and reduce the risk of damage to both the tow vehicle and the vehicle in tow.

When attaching the rope or chain to either vehicle it should be attached the frame or axle if possible. If it is attached to the sub frame it will most likely bend. Consult the owners manual to find the proper method and locations for towing. If a tow hook is not available then wrap the strap back over it self if  the strap has a loop on the end. Don't wrap it back on to itself if it has a hook. Use a short strap with two loops on each end.

Also consider that most straps are stronger than chains. The straps are more easily damaged but are a better choice if they are taken care of. They allow for a smoother ride and reduce damage to the vehicles because they have the ability to stretch.

Another option for towing is to use a hitch as the connecting point if no tow hook is installed on the vehicle. This can be less safe than the wrapping method, as shown above, because if a tow is being done at extreme angles then the strap has the potential of slipping off.

And lastly when towing on the street use the tow vehicle's brake to slow down the lead car and to keep tension on the rope. This will reduce the jerkiness of the ride and reduce wear and tear on the rope. And the number one rule is never run over the rope. This is extremely dangerous and will destroy a rope and cause severer damage to the vehicle.
